In Instagram Direct Messages (DMs), people can talk to each other, whether they are friends, customers, or coworkers. What if you don't want to delete texts but still want to clean up your inbox? The answer is to save your chats. Find out how to save Instagram chats, how it works, and what other options you have.

Is It Possible To Save Instagram Chats?

Right now, Instagram doesn't have a built-in way to save direct texts like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger do. That means you have to delete a chat in order to "hide" it from your inbox.

Ways to "Archive" Instagram Chats:

No need to worry, though. There are a few ways to get around this problem that won't delete your chats forever.

1. For Business Accounts, move conversations to "General."

If you have a Business or Creator account on Instagram, your email is split into two tabs: Primary and General. Chats can be moved to General to make things less crowded.

How to do it:

  • Go to your direct messages on Instagram.

  • Hold down the chat you want to move.

  • Press "Go to General."

  • No one will know, and you can still get to the chat at any time through the General tab.

2. Limit who can use it

If you restrict someone, their messages will be hidden and the exchange will move to your Message Requests.

What to do:

  • Check out their page.

  • In the upper right corner, tap the three-dot option.

  • Click on Limit.

Their messages will still reach you, but they won't show up in your main email.

Good choice if you don't want to delete or block chats but still want to hide them. You can delete and save your chat history. You can keep a copy of a chat even if you have to delete it:

  • Click on Settings, then Your Activity, and then Download your information.

  • Ask for your info, which includes messages.

  • You can safely delete the chat from your app once you get the file.

  • It's not a real-time archive, but it's a good way to save copies of important talks.

Bonus: How to Handle Instagram Direct Messages?

Use labels (through Instagram's direct message tools or third-party customer relationship management (CRM) tools).

If you have a business account, set up quick comments for question and answer posts.

For a better organised layout, you might want to link your Instagram inbox to tools like Facebook Business Suite or Chatix.

What NOT to Do

If you remove a chat, it's gone forever, so don't think that it will be saved. Please do not use images for important conversations. They can't be searched and aren't safe.

Conclusion

Some platforms, like Outlook, let you "archive" messages with just one click. Instagram doesn't, but these smart workarounds can help you better handle your inbox. Keeping your DMs clean can save you time and stress, whether you're doing it for your own peace of mind or because you're running a business.

If you're managing talks with customers or using Instagram for business, you might want to use a chat management tool like Chatix. It puts all of your WhatsApp and Instagram messages in one dashboard and has built-in cart recovery.
